What Are You Looking For?

Psalm 27:8 You have said, “Seek my face.”
My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.” [ESV]

“One of the reasons I’m a Christian is because of all the miracles I see God doing in my life,” explained one of my Public Speaking students. He described a series of situations, like when he received a needed amount of money at just the right time and of running into someone right after praying he would see him on campus.

One of his friends responded that he had never seen a miracle. So my student asked his friend about the Dodge Charger he was looking to buy. His friend said, “It’s amazing. Everywhere I look, I see Dodge Chargers. I never saw them before.” My student wisely pointed out how maybe recognizing miracles was similar to his search for a car. He didn’t see any miracles because he wasn’t looking.

I agree with my student. More often than not, I think we miss God’s miracles in our lives because we’re not looking for them. We may believe in miracles like the Virgin birth and the Resurrection, but when it comes to our everyday lives, we write them off. Maybe we think God has more important things to do than help us pay bills or find a parking spot or think of a creative idea for dinner guests. And of course he does, but to characterize such incidents as “luck” or “coincidence” robs us of the intimacy God desires to have with us.

So what are we looking for?

Are we viewing our circumstances as the product of natural events? Or do we see life as ripe for supernatural intervention because a supernatural God is looking out for us? The importance of seeking God in everyday life can’t be overstated. He promises if we seek him with all our heart we will find him (Jeremiah 29:13).

Let’s follow David’s example. When God told him to look for him, David responded wholeheartedly, “Your face, Lord, do I seek!” He looked for him in every aspect of his life, and it made him a man after God’s heart.

God wants us to recognize him in all the intricacies of our lives. And discovering him is far greater than a Dodge Charger. So don’t miss it.

Look for him!
