Not So Silent

Luke 2:10-11 “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Silent night; holy night;  all is calm; all is bright…

Clamorous protests flood our country from its border walls to the halls of Congress. Harsh words of anger and acrimony fill our airwaves. Our world is far from silent. We no longer look to God for our standard of living and consequently, an insidious “creep of cruelty” invades our culture says columnist Hugh Hewitt. Our world is not holy. Conflicts, floods, fires and hurricanes rob people of stability as well as their earthly goods. Our world is neither calm nor bright for many. And life expectancy in the United States has dropped significantly in the last few years, due in large part to the alarming increase in suicide and substance abuse. Our world is not resting in Heavenly peace.

Enter into all this Christmas 2018. Enter the timeless message of hope for a weary world. I have a feeling there’s never been a century, a decade or a year when the world has not needed to hear about the dawn of redeeming grace. “Today a Savior has been born to you…the Messiah, the Lord.”

Christmas tells us 2,000 years ago one silent night spoke—and continues to speak—louder than all the voices of malice and disruption. The holiness contained in one helpless baby proves strong enough to defeat every evil unrighteous act that would ever exist on the face of the earth. It reminds us hope comes in unlikely ways to those seeking truth. And peace can happen on the inside no matter what is happening on the outside.

I don’t know where you are this season. But I do know our not so silent world will drown out this marvelous message of hope if you let it. Ah, friend, don’t let that happen. As you hear the strains of the beloved Christmas carol this year, remember how he came one silent, holy night so you could enter into a lifetime of God’s pure light. Bask in those radiant beams. Christ the Savior is born!
