A God For All Seasons

god for all seasons1Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Decades of faithfulness and constancy have a way of building trust….at least in my life.

In those teenage years when my half-hearted devotion to Him should have disqualified me from any hope of a deeper life…God remained fully devoted to me. My 20-something years thrust me into a search for identity that took me to the edge—an edge that solidified rather than destroyed who I was becoming—because of His protection. The next decades of living life as a “responsible adult” brought inevitable pain as well as unexpected pleasures. Through every crashing wave of failure and lofty crest of happiness, God’s love remained immoveable.

The last few years have been marked with pretty significant shifts. Of saying goodbye to some loved ones, of saying hello to others. Of expanding and shrinking spheres. Of more caution…probably too much caution. Yet the God who never changes has carried me through every transition.

God is a God for all seasons. He remains faithful when we are not (2 Timothy 2:13). He brings stability in our confusion (Philippians 4:7). He is Someone to thank when our cup overflows (James 1:17). Someone to seek when we’re running on empty (Psalm 16:5). Not one moment of our existence lies beyond his reach. “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there” (Psalm 139:8).

How could we not trust such a God? The One who formed us in our mother’s womb and crowned us with the dignity of life has a track record of remaining when all else fades.

So God is a God for all seasons. But he goes beyond seasons. Someday when our seasons cease to exist, God will bring us through the valley of death. The Eternal God who has no beginning or end has always and will always be there. He who is everlasting offers a reason for everlasting hope.

No matter what season of life you’re experiencing right now, you can trust in the God who never changes. The stability you long for can be found in no other place. The God who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow remains with you, before you, behind you. Let Him walk you through each day, each year, each decade. To Eternity.

  1. I second what you have written. I am 73 this year and have been a widow for 43 of those years, raised 2 daughters, and had a Plant nursery business for about 48 years. Through all the ups and downs and deep water and storms, Our God has seen me through. Ever faithful, ever sweet, correcting and blessing, always there.
