The Wild Truth

truthIsaiah 59:14 “So justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter.”

GK Chesterton writes, “The heavenly chariot flies thundering through the ages, the dull heresies sprawling and prostrate, the wild truth reeling, but erect.” Oh how we underestimate the power of truth.

There’s no question we live in a world where truth appears to be stumbling in the streets…especially in election years. I don’t know about you, but at times I’m tempted to think the LIE is bigger than the TRUTH. But deceit, no matter how persistent, how ruthless, how successful in distorting reality, will eventually fall under the supremacy of truth. Our problem is that we forget.

But Scripture resounds with reminders…

  • Truth wins. Lies lose.  Psalms 5:6 “you destroy those who tell lies.”
  • Truth resurrects. Lies rot and decay. Proverbs 12:19 “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.”
  • Truth clarifies. Lies distort.  John 16:13 “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
  • Truth builds. Lies destroy.  John 8:44 “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of  lies.”
  • Truth frees. Lies enslave.  John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

So if you’re discouraged when truth appears to stagger and honesty seems barred from the arena, don’t believe the lie. Resist that old father of lies who wants you to be so disheartened that you give up. Truth will prevail in the end. As Chesterton penned, truth may reel from all kinds of heretical assaults, but in the end nothing can stop the indomitable, unconquerable, invincible truth!
